Another Reply back from a Professor
Hey
I know it’s late but Mr O’Malley (one of the Professor’s I emailed) replied back from my message and has given me some advice on 2 books:
· The entry for Julius II in THE PAPACY: AN ENCYCLOPEDIA, 3 vols., published by Routledge, NY, 2002, under editorship of Philippe Levillain, pp. 884-886 (vol. 2), with bibliography. (Turns out Mr O’Malley also consulted the edition in the English language)
· The University of Toronto edition of COLLECTED WORKS OF ERASMUS, vol 27, for text and information about Erasmus’ dialogue “Julius Excluded” -excluded from heaven because of his wars. (I have already borrowed this as a book from Syd Uni)
The 1st book is available from Syd Uni and the State Library which is great for me to access. I shall be making a list of books that I need to photocopy on my next visit to the State Library or Syd Uni. Till then, more reading and research for relevant information will be continued for my Major.

Hey
Excellent news! The Professor/Dr, I emailed yesterday replied back and suggested 2 books for me to read.
- The Pope’s Daughter: The Extraordinary Life of Felice della Rovere by Caroline Murphy
- And of course Christine Shaw’s book.
He also asked what areas of the topic I’m investigating and suggested these areas:
- PJII political significance
- The culture of the Roman Papal Court, including Art Patronage
- The machinations of PJII’s career
Anyways, I just wanted to notify you. I also replied back to the email and told him I was investigating in the two interpretations of PJII and using my enquiry questions.
I also emailed three Professors, one from the University of Notre Dame, her name is Margaret Meserve, one from Simon Fraser University, her name is Emily O’Brien and the last one is from Georgetown University, his name is John W. O’Malley. So hopefully I’ll get a reply from them. I found there names in one of the database papers that I printed off and read through. As well as I have found the historian named Jacob Burckhardt who wrote the book ‘The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy’ and I broswed through the contents of the book on google and found some good chapters that I would like to check out. Both books, by Burckhardt and Murphy are at the State Library, but Burckhardt’s book is also at Syndey Uni.

Hey
Today I was doing some reading on the database information that I found last time and Sir was able to show me where to find some professors who are ‘experts’ in the area that I am doing. I was only able to, at the moment, find one named Dr Nicholas Eckstein (at Syd Uni) who is familiar with the Renaissance period in Italy. I have contacted him via email and hopefully I’ll receive a reply. I am also searching for Universities in Italy and tomorrow I will be browsing the Vatican’s site and checking if there is any information from there.
I have also been searching the databases of Sydney Uni, Wollongong and Charles Sturt. However it is still continuing as I have found a few things but they aren’t relevant to what I am doing. So I am still searching.
I am also waiting for the arrival of my book, Pope Julius II: The Warrior Pope by Christine Shaw – it has already been 3 weeks.
In the meantime I shall be writing notes and reading my sources so far.

Hello
Yesterday we had a lesson with Sir for our majors which was great. I was able to talk about my major and where I was up to. He also was able to show us how to access databases and where to locate the ones that we need to use.
When I got home I was able to log in to the state library’s ProQuest databases because of my library card that I have with the state from my first visit. Anyways I found 4 really good resources to use, they are:
- Journal of Ecclesiastical History by Owen Chadwick
- Early Modern European – Julius II; The Warrior Pope by Christine Shaw by Minnich, Nelson H (review)
- Patronage and Dynasty: The Rise of the della Rovere in Renaissance Italy by Christine M Shaw
- The Eighty-Eighth Annual Meeting of the American Catholic Historical Association by Anonymous
So I printed all of them off yesterday and I am going to start reading them shortly and writing notes.
I have a lot of reading to get through but I will be able to manage it.
Anyways, happy reading for me, cyaa!
